corallo chair
the chairmakers 2021
inspired by the aquatic world, my striking chair resembles a coral. the concept is based on a three-dimensional seat shell and focuses on the connection of the four rings. these can be differentiated into three sizes and are designed to be constructive.
the seat shell was formed from styrofoam as a support for model making, sanded and adapted to the circles, which were intended to be constructive.
finally, the shell was laminated with epoxy resin, reinforced with fiberglass, sanded and painted black.
i designed the frame for the seat shell minimalistically, but in such a way that it distributes all the forces of the shell well. the material I chose was spruce, a light solid wood with a beautiful and delicate grain. the two intermediate beams of the wooden frame serve as a connection to the seat shell and act on the main forces. concealed wooden dowels and epoxy resin hold the bowl in place. elastic bands wrapped around the circles add comfort and unity.
